Privacy notice

This notice explains what personal data Lightleap collects through this website and the Notes from the Energy Frontier newsletter, why, and what you can do about it.

Who is responsible for your data

Lightleap Limited is the controller of your personal data. Lightleap Limited is registered in England and Wales, company number 14037950. Registered office: 82 Oswald Road, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, DN15 7PA, United Kingdom.

For anything about your data, email hello@lightleap.co.uk.

What I collect

  • Newsletter sign-ups. Your email address, plus information recorded when you sign up: the date and time, the form you used, the page you came from, any campaign tags in the link you followed, and technical details such as your IP address and browser.
  • Newsletter emails. Every newsletter email includes open and click tracking from Beehiiv, which sends the newsletter. It's built in and can't be switched off. A tiny image in each email tells Beehiiv when you open it, and links go through Beehiiv first so it can record which ones you click. Beehiiv also records whether each email is delivered. I use the totals to see which issues and links people find useful. You can avoid open tracking by turning off images in your email app, or stop all tracking by unsubscribing.
  • Emails you send me. If you email hello@lightleap.co.uk, I receive your name, email address and whatever you choose to write.

Why I use it, and the lawful basis

  • Sending the newsletter: your consent, which you give by signing up. You can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing.
  • Open and click tracking: Lightleap's legitimate interest in understanding whether the newsletter is useful.
  • Replying to your emails: Lightleap's legitimate interest in answering people who get in touch.

I don't sell your data, and I don't use it for advertising.

Who else handles it

  • Beehiiv (beehiiv Inc.) runs the newsletter: the sign-up form, the subscriber list and sending the emails. It acts as Lightleap's processor. Beehiiv also uses some of this data for its own purposes, such as security and preventing spam and abuse, and its privacy policy covers that. Beehiiv is based in the United States, so your data is transferred outside the UK. Beehiiv's Data Protection Addendum forms part of its Terms of Use, so it applies to Lightleap's account. For transfers from the UK, it uses the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses together with the UK International Data Transfer Addendum issued by the Information Commissioner.
  • Vercel (Vercel Inc.) hosts this website. When you visit, Vercel processes technical data such as your IP address, browser details and the pages you request, so it can serve the site and keep it secure.
  • Google Workspace (Google) hosts the hello@lightleap.co.uk mailbox, so emails you send there are stored by Google.

Vercel and Google are based in the United States, so this data may be processed outside the UK.

  • Vercel's Data Processing Addendum is part of its Terms of Service and covers its paid Pro and Enterprise plans. For transfers from the UK, it uses the Standard Contractual Clauses together with the UK International Data Transfer Addendum.
  • Google's Cloud Data Processing Addendum forms part of Lightleap's Google Workspace agreement. For transfers under UK data protection law, it uses a recognised data protection framework where Google has adopted one, and otherwise the Standard Contractual Clauses together with the UK International Data Transfer Addendum.

Cookies and other services

Lightleap's own pages set no cookies and use no analytics or advertising trackers.

The newsletter sign-up form on the Newsletter and Energy Frontier pages is embedded from Beehiiv. Nothing loads from Beehiiv when you open those pages. The form loads only if you click "Show the sign-up form". After you click, Beehiiv's form:

  • sets its own cookies on beehiiv.com. When I checked on 3 November 2026 these included a session cookie for the form (_subscribe_forms_session), Cloudflare cookies (__cf_bm, cf_clearance) and HUMAN cookies (_pxvid, _px3, pxcts), and it also stored HUMAN data in your browser's local storage;
  • loads Cloudflare and HUMAN (HUMAN Security) bot protection, which check whether the visitor is a person, to stop spam sign-ups;
  • loads Google Tag Manager, which Beehiiv uses to run its own tags, which can include analytics;
  • loads Google Fonts from Google's servers, and some of its code from a public code library service (jspm.io).

These services receive technical data such as your IP address and browser details. Beehiiv, Cloudflare, HUMAN and Google decide how they use it, and Beehiiv's privacy policy explains Beehiiv's part. The list above is what I saw on the date shown; Beehiiv may change it.

If you'd rather Beehiiv's form didn't load in your browser, don't click the button: email hello@lightleap.co.uk instead and I'll add you myself. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings.

How long I keep it

  • Subscribers: while you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe, I'll delete your details within 30 days, keeping only what's needed to make sure you aren't emailed again.
  • Emails to hello@: for as long as needed to deal with what you asked, and no longer than 2 years.

Your rights

You can ask to see the personal data Lightleap holds about you, have it corrected or deleted, restrict or object to how it's used, or receive a copy to take elsewhere. Email hello@lightleap.co.uk and I'll reply within one month.

To unsubscribe, use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any newsletter email, or email hello@lightleap.co.uk.

Complaints

If you're unhappy with how your data has been handled, please tell me first at hello@lightleap.co.uk. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or 0303 123 1113.
